HAPPY FRIDAY!

I’m so happy some of you picked up (and read!) CITY OF NIGHT by John Rechy after I mentioned it.

Now I’m really gonna have to re-read it when I’m back in the states.

In the meantime, I’ll wrap up my YELLOW HAZE posts with the third (and final) installment of the stroy.

Once we’d finished shooting, and I was back in NYC, I started to put the story visuals together.

I’ve always kept a big corkboard front and center in my workspaces. Sometimes they’ve been a whole wall, sometimes a series of portable corkboards I could move and rearrange wherever I needed them.

These corkboards became the canvas for YELLOW HAZE.

I cut up contact sheets.

Printed out images, xeroxed them, and re-photographed them.

Pinned up polaroids.

I even tacked on a torn garbage bag for part one :)

As John sent pages, I’d send him shots of my in-progress corkboards…

When it came time to deliver YELLOW HAZE to OUT magazine, I just brought in stacks of these 3-foot, corkboard collages and we scanned them as they were.

.

I saved those finished boards for years.

I may still have them somewhere, tucked away in the archive, but somehow I doubt it.

There’s something about this collage-style format that’s really stuck with me all these years. I haven’t really done anything else in this style, and I definitely haven’t used this format for telling stories.

I feel like maybe it should make a comeback :)

I certainly have no shortage of visual stories swimming around in my head...
