HAPPY FRIDAY!

I’m writing from one of the most beautiful places in the world - Fernando de Noronha, a small island off the Northeast coast of Brazil. If you wanna see what it’s like, check out my IG where I’m posting on stories regularly.

I was so happy to hear from a bunch of you that you picked up John Rechy’s CITY OF NIGHT.

I’ll be so curious to hear what you think.

It’s probably time for a reread on my part as well, it’s been at least ten years since I last picked it up, and I’m curious how it’ll stand up to my memories of it.

Now back to YELLOW HAZE.

.

Once I’d convinced OUT magazine to let me do YELLOW HAZE and we’d tracked down John Rechy in Los Angeles, it was time to figure out how to create the story.

.

I figured I’d go to LA and bring our “main character,” who was to be played by a guy I was obsessed with shooting at the time - Claude Gilbert.

He plays “Dude” in the story.

.

(I’ve always found endless inspiration in the guys - and sometimes girls - I shoot. I know I’ve talked about it before, but give me a guy I’m in love with photographing, and I’m at my creative best. Claude was 100% my obsession at the time we shot YELLOW HAZE.)

I went to California with Paul Stura, an incredible stylist, and we relied on street casting for all the other parts.

We found “Sunny” on Venice Beach, and “Buzz” somewhere in West Hollywood. I don’t remember where we found “Pretty,” but I do remember that “Angel” was a kid on vacation with his dad, who tagged along for our entire shoot.

Oh, how bizarre he must have thought we were - but so fucking cool that he let his eleven-year-old kid take part.

We didn’t really have any sort of story when we started, but we improvised and shot a whole range of pictures and Polaroids.

I then took some of these shots to share with John, and he used them as a jumping-off point for writing the chapters…
