HAPPY FRIDAY

Somehow I almost forgot it’s Friday.

I started this draft earlier this week and just now realized (as I was getting ready to head out and run some errands) that it’s Friday.

Hope everyone’s week was good.

I’m happy to report I spent the week watching some great movies.

.

First up was OBSESSION.

I’d been anxiously awaiting this one since I first read about it after it premiered at TIFF.

.

A magic wish love spell gone horribly wrong?

YES PLEASE.

.

And man does it deliver.

It comes out wide next week on the 15th I think. It’s daark and violent and mean and also somehow funny.

So fucking good.

There’s a reason the director’s already been hired to reboot TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.

Next up was MOTHER MARY.

I didn’t know what to expect with this one. I’d already had my fill on Anne Hathaway after THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 (which was about as meh as it gets imo) BUT I love Michaela Coel and the director David Lowery is super interesting (he did THE GREEN KNIGHT and GHOST STORY).

I did NOT know that it also centers around a sort of magical spirit spell gone wrong.

.

I won’t say more because I don’t wanna give anything away, but seeing these two back to back has me very convinced that nothing good comes from this sort of Magic.

.

In movies at least.

Anyone know a film where the Magic (or Magick if you prefer) goes wonderfully right?

.

Anyway, MOTHER MARY made me kind of fall in love with Anne Hathaway.

I’ve never really cared about her one way or another but she’s fucking brilliant in this.

It’s like a two hour two hander between her and Michaela Coel and it’s gooooooooood.

And then last night I saw BLUE FILM.

I had avoided reading too much about this one becasue i wanted to go in blind.

It was a surprisingly touching and at times tender story about a hustler and his client who spend one night together in Los Angeles.

It takes some really difficult characters and puts their humanity front and center instead of the bad things they’ve done.

It’s only playing in NYC and LA at the moment I think but it’s worth tracking down once it’s available widely.

I also saw HOKUM but man oh man did I dislike it - so disappointing.

We’re currently plotting and planning our story for issue number two. It’ll be less glitter and sparkle, more blood, sweat, and pain. It’s gonna feature one of the dead boys you know and love.
